Metal oxide nanoparticles for safe active and intelligent food packaging

Food safety and food security remain the major concern of consumers industry. Bacterial contamination continues to be a crucial issue. Smart packaging incorporates both active intelligent components. Intrinsic antibacterial activity, oxygen ethylene scavenging (active) sensing (intelligent) properties metal oxide nanoparticles are in research focus for application smart packaging, especially bio-nanocomposite films. Metal nanoparticle closely linked their morphology resulting from synthesis process. In this review, we cover current innovative methods obtaining incorporation techniques used obtain (active and/or intelligent) focusing on bio-nanocomposites, commonly oxides future mixed or doped oxides. Taking into account safety, legislation, risk assessment due particle release material summary cytotoxic studies human cells gut microbiota. Antimicrobial effectiveness is highly dependent as result method.
